UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Troopers says the driver of a pick-up truck was speeding and drunk when he crashed into a tree in Union County early Sunday morning.
Troopers say 47-year-old Anthony Jordan of Monroe swerved to one side of Sikes Mill Road and then to the other before crashing.
He died a short time afterwards, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Kate Myers lives nearby and heard it happen. At first, she didn't know what the loud noise was, but then heard the crunch of metal and knew something bad had happened.
Union County sheriff's deputies tell us Jordan was badly hurt.
He had to be cut out of the car and was taken by helicopter to the hospital. They say he was charged with DWI, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. No one else was inside the vehicle.
Troopers shut down the road for an hour and a half while they worked on clearing the scene.
