"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Here we go again -- another transition within the school system.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board unanimously agreed Dr. Heath Morrison should be the next Superintendent.

Out of the nearly 90 candidates who applied for the job, Morrison emerged as the top pick.

To Dr. Morrison, we say "Welcome," and "you have your work cut out for you."

A new superintendent is coming to the district at a time when there is unrest throughout the community.

Neighbors on the south side of town want to break away and form their own school district…

teachers still don't trust the administration…

and many are still angry that CMS closed several schools last year.

We believe the new superintendent must hit the ground running…put out all those fires so that the district can be great again.

Dr. Morrison said he wants to rebuild trust.

He says that in order for that to happen he must "communicate with the public and be honest."

Those are his exact words.

So, it's up to each of you to hold him accountable.

Let Dr. Morrison know you expect an increase in CMS' graduation rate…

you demand academic achievement for all students…

and you want equitable resources at all schools.

You and the School Board are, in essence, Dr. Morrison's bosses.

Your tax dollars are helping pay his salary, which could top 300 thousand dollars a year.

Let him know early and often if he's getting the job done.

We believe a school district can only be great if the entire community chips in.
