MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) - Members of New Beginnings Church spent hours Friday pumping gas for a few hundred people.
The church gave away $15 worth of gas to 334 drivers. The giveaway took place at the Sunoco at the corner of Idlewild and Margaret Wallace in Mint Hill.
The event started at noon and lasted until about 3 p.m.
Dorothy Whales showed up at 6:45 a.m. to be the first in line. "Every little bit helps," Whales said.
As gas prices inch higher inch closer to the $4 mark - it was $3.93 at the Sunoco station - $15 bought just under 4 gallons.
"We believe the church is outside of the four walls. Our purpose is to equip people to go out and help those particularly those less fortunate," Rev. Twanna Henderson said.
"I saw this on the news this morning and thought ok I'm going get up and get some gas," Driver Tearia Herring said.
"Since I live on Idlewild, I thought I would just stop by and see what was going. And I was just getting ready to give up and someone told me to pull in," Shannon Allen said.
Three kids - three gallons worth of free gas - it gives mom Shannon Allen just the boost she needs to buy other necessities. "Maybe groceries tonight."
Mint Hill Police helped direct traffic to help move drivers in and out more quickly.
The church says this was the first time it had a giveaway quite like this.
