Vigil held for Charlotte teen killed in I-77 crash

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Candles shined bright as friends, family and students remembered 16-year old Thomas Luciano.

Hundreds of students turned out for a vigil Monday night for the South Mecklenburg High School teen killed in a crash on I-77 north in Fort Mill. Some participants clutched Puerto Rican flags - the symbol of the victim's native land. One student says the turnout shows just how good a person he was.

"I think it just demonstrates to the family just how much he was loved. The amount of people that he touched, and that he was a good kid," said family friend Maggie Giraud.

Sunday, students gathered at South Meck to paint a rock and place flowers for Luciano. Friends said he was a bright, funny student who was really involved in JROTC.

Luciano was killed around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on I-77 when troopers say the driver, 17, was trying to change lanes and lost control.

Luciano was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

That female driver and two other teens in the vehicle were taken to the hospital.

The crash closed the interstate for two hours.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating.
