Arrest made in 2004 cold case Charlotte murder

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Charlotte police say they've arrested a man who they say fatally shot another man in 2004.

Hayward Lee Dixon, 42, was charged Monday with the murder of William Thomas McDowell, according to a news release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

McDowell was found shot to death on July 5, 2004. Police arrested Dixon on the 1000 block of Saratoga Drive.

Detectives with the CMPD Homicide Unit's Cold Case Squad were able to re-examine the case when a witness recently came forward with information that led to follow-up interviews with other witnesses.  As a result of the continuing investigation, Detectives charged Dixon with the murder of McDowell, according to the release.

The shooting stemmed from an earlier confrontation between Dixon and McDowell.  When officers arrived on the scene, 224 Jones Street, they found McDowell lying unresponsive in the driveway area. McDowell was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Dixon is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, being held under no bond.
