Fans push to bring Hornets name back to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A push to bring the Hornets names back to Charlotte basketball is gaining momentum.

Scotty Kent and John Morgan are passionate about their purple and teal.

"This is something that can immediately invigorate this community," said Morgan.

Their grassroots effort to rename the Charlotte Bobcats began earlier this year.

And it wasn't long before the "Bring Back the Buzz" campaign took on a life of its own.

They created a website, Facebook page, Twitter account and a petition with more than 3,000 signatures.

They also crafted a plan to swarm Friday's Bobcats game wearing Hornets gear.

Even former Hornets' superstar Mugsy Bogues expressed his excitement on twitter.

"I'm amped about tonight, I'm so excited about tonight," said Kent.

But in order for the Charlotte Bobcats to rebrand itself as the Charlotte Hornets, the New Orleans Hornets would have to give the name up.

Some say it won't happen and it's not worth it.

"Yeah, it goes down in history, but we need to let it stay in history, " said one Bobcats fan.

But Morgan and Kent think the timing is right.

The Hornets are shopping for a new owner and a new owner would have the option to change the name.

Still, NBA officials estimate a rebrand would cost at least $10 million which doesn't include the cost of new uniforms and logos.

Kent says its money well spent to bring back to Charlotte what's rightfully ours.

"There is a support for this and it's huge," said Kent.

The Bobcats would not comment officially on this story, but a source with the Bobcats says a rebrand is highly unlikely and would be a "monumental endeavor".

The source also told WBTV there is no point in commenting on hypothetical situations.
