Officer hit with side of truck as suspect flees scene, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was grazed by the side of a truck after police say a man was caught in the process of stealing in south Charlotte.

Police say the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

According to police, the officer saw a man stealing something on South Boulevard and confronted the man.  That's when the officer was brushed by a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Haywood Benard Reid, as Reid attempted to get away.

Police say the truck went off the road near a gas station at the intersection of Arrowood Road and Nations Ford Road.

Officers chased the man on foot and were able to catch him and he is now in police custody.

WBTV has learned the officer grazed by the truck is expected to be okay.
