Charlotte public transit costs may soon increase

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Gas prices are up for the 20th day straight, and prices aren't just rising at the pump. Now CATS wants to hike up the cost of taking the bus or light rail. Some fares could increase by nearly 15%

Leaders with the Metropolitan Transit Commission heard from Charlotteans about the proposed changes. The changes include 25 cents more for local bus rides and the Lynx light rail. Express fees within Mecklenburg County are proposed to increase by 35 cents.

"Twenty five cents is a lot and adds up quickly if you ride the bus every day," said resident Janice Cerniglia.

CATS spokeswoman Jean Leier says the increase happens every two years, because of inflation and other operating costs.

"We need to maintain our costs so we can keep the service we currently have out on the street for the customers," she said.

She added the raises every two years are incremental, to avoid a major jump. Commission members will take a final vote April 25th.
