CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - When you're in a deep sleep and your alarm jolts you out of bed, you can start the day off a little cranky.
One of many smart phone applications on the market promises to wake you gently, at the most convenient time in your sleep cycle, so that you wake refreshed and energized.
According to the description of the app in the iTunes store, it is an alarm clock that analyzes your sleep patterns and wakes you in the lightest sleep phase. It says it is a natural way to wake up where you feel rested and relaxed.
We asked three WBTV staff members with wacky schedules to put the Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock for the iPhone to the test and we asked a doctor to weigh in.
"It is actually a valid idea and it is based on good science. We wake better from lighter stages of sleep," said Dr. Carolyn Hart with Presbyterian Sleep Health.
Hart warns, however, it should not be a substitute for a good night's sleep.
"Waking up at an ideal stage of sleep is a great idea but it won't make you feel good if you've only had 4 hours sleep," she said.
One of our testers loved the app, another had mixed results, and it didn't work for the third. You can learn more about their results by watching the video on this page.
