ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A plane with two people on board crashed into High Rock Lake Friday afternoon.

Authorities say Steve Bown and Karyn Martin of Michigan died in the crash.  Bown was the head of Performance Springs.  The company is well known in the NASCAR, NHRA, and IRL racing circuits.

Martin's body was recovered shortly after the crash.  Bown's body was discovered shortly before noon on Saturday by a dive team.  The body was found in the airplane in approximately 25 feet of water, according to officials.

The plane was a Cessna 350 that departed the Davidson County Airport at 1:15 p.m. en route to Florida, according to the airport's manager.

The couple had spent the night in Davidson County after flying in from Commerce Township, Michigan on Thursday evening.

After the initial departure communications with the aircraft, controllers at the airport did not hear from it again.

The plane was reported down in the lake around 1:45 p.m.

Emergency crews say the single-engine plane crashed in the water near Cow Island on Friday afternoon.

Rowan County Emergency Services Director Frank Thomason said the airplane broke apart when it hit the water.

Emergency crews began getting calls around 1:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol helicopter spotted a fuel leak on top of the water and saw debris from the plane.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration arrived on scene at 4 p.m.

The search for Bown's body was stopped around 5:45 p.m. Friday due to heavy fog on the lake. The search resumed around 9:00 a.m. Saturday, and the body was found in a little over two hours.
