Man charged with strangling woman, leaving body in vacant house

LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) - Deputies in Lancaster say they arrested a man who strangled a Lancaster woman and left her body in a vacant home.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to vacant home along Starnes Street in the Brooklyn Avenue neighborhood of Lancaster around 11 a.m. on February 24th.

When they arrived, deputies found the body of a woman, later identified as 54-year-old Linda Massey Gaymon.

Deputies say Terry Catoe, 39, was identified as a potential suspect in the murder on Wednesday and taken into custody on another charge.  He was charged with Gaymon's murder late Thursday afternoon.

Gaymon's cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation, deputies say, and is believed to have strangled Gaymon.

"We are pleased that this violent individual responsible for Linda Gaymon's death has been taken into custody," Sheriff Faile said. "Our Investigators worked really hard to put this case together. I am thankful for that hard work and the citizens who came forward with valuable information to help us solve this case."

Catoe remains incarcerated at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
