Hotel guests in for CIAA robbed at gunpoint overnight

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Hotel guests in for the CIAA basketball tournament are surprised by two gunmen who rob them early Friday morning.

The Best Western Hotel off of East Woodlawn Road near I-77 is a lot like Charlotte itself, packed to the gills with fans of college basketball.

But there was no fanfare about what happened at the hotel overnight.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they received a call just after 1am from several people staying in one of the rooms on the third floor.

A group of people were enjoying the night air in the hotel breezeway after a day of festivities, when they were confronted by two unknown men who pulled guns on the guests.

The suspects were pretty brazen, not even bothering to cover their faces during the crime.

Police said the gunmen proceeded to clean the victims out, taking just about everything they had on them, before running down the outside staircase and through the parking lot.

None of the victims were hurt.

The CMPD is working a possible lead.  The gunmen may have run right past a sweepstakes gaming center located next door to the hotel.  Businesses like that usually have cameras on site, and it's hoped there was an image captured of the robbers running away.

The hotel itself may have had hundreds of people staying there that night.  There was a hand-written note on the front door informing passersby that all the rooms were booked.

With all of the people at the Best Western Friday morning, we posed the question to officers working the scene: why were these people robbed over everyone else?

Police told us the gunman picked out people they perceived as the easiest target.
