Agent steals $100K for faux CIAA party with Chris Brown, Diddy

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - CIAA weekend has arrived, and it's packed with celebrity appearances.  Dozens of big names from Boys 2 Men to Estelle will host parties around the Queen City, but fans are finding out two of the biggest acts are no-shows.

Singer Chris Brown and rapper Diddy are not hosting events that hundreds of fans already bought tickets for.

"I was looking forward to seeing P. Diddy," said Charlotte resident Corey Davis.

"That's pretty messed up," said another fan who just heard the news Thursday night.

But don't blame Diddy for skipping town.

Ken Harris manages Doc Roc Entertainment in Charlotte. He worked with another local group to get Diddy and Brown to CIAA weekend.  He said it isn't Diddy's fault the party won't be taking place as planned.

"He's probably just as confused and stymied as we are down here in Charlotte," said Harris.

Harris said several Charlotte groups had worked with a booking agent out of New York who had a reputation for coming through with big acts.  Harris said he didn't come through this time.

"Unfortunately, the booking agent for the event up in New York took the money," said Harris.

Harris would not name the agent, but said he took over $100,000 from Charlotte promoters without ever talking to Diddy or Chris Brown. The team in Charlotte scrambled for replacements including boxing great Floyd Mayweather and American Idol Fantasia Barrino.

While some fans said they won't miss Diddy or Brown, others weren't impressed with the new lineup.

"You mentioned they have replacements, but Fantasia doesn't really make up for Chris Brown in my opinion!" said Ayanha Qawwee, who's visiting Charlotte for the CIAA tournament.

Even so...the show will go on.

"You've got good apples and you've got bad apples in every bunch," said Davis. "It's not going to stop the CIAA."

Fans who purchased tickets to see Diddy or Chris Brown are getting refunds according to Harris.  The new parties will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to 4am. Tickets at the door start at $20 - $50.

Harris, who is also a well know Charlotte attorney, said the groups that dealt with the booking agent in question plan to file a police report and pursue civil action as well.
