MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) - A local Marine was injured over the weekend, losing his legs, while serving in Afghanistan.
Corporal Garrett John Carnes, 22, was injured on Sunday while he and two other Marines were clearing houses in a village, his family told WBTV.
He is a member of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, India Company which is based out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
According to a Marines spokesperson, Corporal Carnes' unit was deployed to Afghanistan in October 2011.
His unit is training the Afghan National Security Force to take over operations.
Carnes is a graduate of Mooresville High School. He and his wife, Courtney, live in Mooresville.
Carnes was flown to Germany Wednesday morning where he will undergo surgery before arriving in Bethesda, Maryland on Friday.
His wife and family will be there to meet him.
They plan on setting up a local fund to help wounded soldiers like Carnes.
