CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A 20-year-old man is dead after police say he crashed his SUV into a tree in a south Charlotte neighborhood on Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the crash along the 4000 block of Quail View Road around 11:17 a.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of Lindstrom Drive.
Video from Sky 3 showed a white 2000 Toyota 4-runner that ran off the road and crashed into a tree. Officers say the man killed in the crash was 20-year-old man Charles Gardner Butterworth.
Butterworth's Toyota was traveling northwest on Quail View Road and entered into a slight curve to the left, police told WBTV on Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle continued straight and ran off the road to the right. The Toyota struck a large tree in the front yard of 5131 Lindstrom Drive.
Police say Butterworth was unrestrained and was pronounced deceased by Medic at the scene.
Neighbors say Butterworth, who went by Charlie, worked at a video production company in Charlotte. Butterworth was also an Eagle Scout, one neighbor told WBTV.
The speed limit along the road is 25 miles-per-hour and the street has speed bumps.
The Major Crash Investigations Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Initial investigation suggests excessive speed may be a contributing circumstance.
There were no skid marks along the street near the scene of the crash. Police say there were no witnesses to the crash and only one person heard the wreck.
One neighbor told WBTV that Butterworth's mother was at home during the crash and came up on the wreck as she was leaving the house.
