FAIRVIEW, NC (WBTV) - Three people are hurt, one seriously, in a crash that shut down a major intersection in Union County for over two hours this afternoon.

Trooper John Burgin tells WBTV a person driving a white Nissan sedan was driving northbound on Highway 601, near Clontz Long Road, around noon. The driver stopped to make a left turn on a driveway, when a person driving a county schools van hit them from behind. Moments later, a pickup truck carrying an ATV, driving southbound, struck the Nissan head on.

Trooper Burgin says a woman sitting in the front passenger seat of the Nissan was pinned under the dashboard of the vehicle for 20 minutes. She was airlifted to the hospital. WBTV is still awaiting word on her condition. The driver of the Nissan and driver of the pickup truck were also hurt. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

We're told the driver of the county van was ticketed for failing to reduce speed.

The roadway was shut down for more than two hours while the vehicles were towed and debris was cleared.
