Here are some names you probably recognize:

Rosa Parks – a well-known icon in the civil rights movement.

Dizzy Gillespie – world-renowned trumpet player.

And with the recent release of the movie "Red Tails," more people than ever now know the story of The Tuskegee Airmen -- America's first black military aviators.

But, have you heard of North Carolina Congressman George Henry White?

Professional golfer Charlie Sifford?

Or Sarah Mae Flemming Brown?

Her federal lawsuit helped desegregate public transportation across America.

The Carolinas are home to many important African-American pioneers.

That's why WBTV is proud to bring you Black History Month vignettes throughout February.

All the stories are also available on our website…WBTV dot com.

They are fascinating profiles of people who through talent, courage and personal sacrifice brought about positive change in our society.

Making  America we live in today a better place for ALL people.

We hope you will join us in honoring the achievements of these outstanding individuals.

And we encourage you to follow in their footsteps as WBTV celebrates Black History Month.
