Race to held in honor of police officer

Posted: Updated:

Albemarle, NC (WBTV) - Later today, runners will toe the start line for a race in memory of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer killed in the line of duty.

The second annual Run for their Lives 5k will take place outside the YMCA in downtown Albemarle at 3:00 this afternoon. The race for officer Jeff Shelton was launched by Gray Stone Day School student Camden Lambert. Officers Shelton and Sean Clark were gunned down by Demeatrius Montgomery while responding to a call in an apartment complex in 2007.  Montgomery has been convicted but is trying to get the ruling overturned. His lawyers are questioning whether he was competent to stand trial.

The 3.1 mile run begins at the YMCA in downtown Albemarle. The cost is $20.00 in advance and $25.00 prior to the start of the race.
