Slushy roads and icy spots following wintry weather mix

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Skies are clear this morning with temperatures in the upper 20s. Take caution to potential slushy roads that may freeze this morning.

As always, bridges and overpasses are expected to be the worst as they will be at sub freezing temperatures the longest.  Icy spots could also be an issue this morning on the morning commute as well.

Several inches fell in the mountains, a welcome sign for the tourism industry heading into what could be a busy Presidents Day.

Public schools in Ashe, Avery, MItchell, and Watauga Counties all canceled classes for the day.

In the foothills, the snow stopped Sunday night around 6 p.m.

But that couple of inches of snow on Sunday in the North Carolina Mountains resulted in huge crowds at the ski resorts.

President's Day Weekend is usually one of the biggest tourist weekends of the winter each year and this was no different, thanks to the change in weather.

Ski areas have been struggling this winter because of the unusually warm weather. The slopes have been open every day but for one or two since mid-December but officials say when temperatures are in the 60's off the mountain in places like Charlotte many skiers don't feel the urge to hit the slopes.

"First time I've skied in North Carolina this year for that reason," said Chris Massey of Gastonia as he waited in a lift line at Sugar Mountain on Monday. Massey said it has been so warm he took his ski trips to Utah.

Kim Jochl of the resort said it has been a problem this winter but she and other officials hope Sunday's snowfall and renewed interest in skiing translates into a busy last few weeks of the season.

"We plan to stay open well into March and are hoping people who missed skiing in December and January will now come up."

Warm weather is expected to return by mid-week but another cold snap is predicted for next weekend.

Officials say as long as they get those cold snaps on the weekends when most skiers hit the slopes the crowds could continue to come and what looked like a dismal year could turn into a good one.

Some areas of Mecklenburg County saw sleet on Sunday evening, and when the temperatures dropped at around 6 this morning, there were wide spread reports of ice on bridges and over passes in the Cornelius area.
