MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

An Alabama Senate Committee has approved proposed legislation to increase the fine for those involved in cockfighting from $50 to $6,000 with up to a year in jail.

Cockfighting, for those us that live in the civilized world and wouldn't know necessarily, is the barbaric blood sport that pits two roosters against each other in a ring.

It gets worse. Did you know the owners of these birds strap sharp objects to the animals' legs to make it even more deadly? And people actually gather to watch this disgusting event.

As my soon-to-be 13-year-old daughter would say: "REALLY? We actually have this "sport" taking place in our state of Alabama?"

Up until now cockfight organizers who were caught received a slap on the wrist and a $50 fine resulting in Alabama becoming a magnet for people in other states with stricter laws to come hold their events here. Really.

We congratulate the lawmakers who are swiftly moving this proposed new legislation through the House and Senate. The days of feathers flying in rings of death for sport must come to an end.

We appreciate and encourage your feedback.
