Union Co. school bus involved in wreck, 6 injured

WESLEY CHAPEL, NC (WBTV) - A school bus in Union County was involved in a wreck near Wesley Chapel Thursday afternoon.

The wreck was reported around 4 p.m. at Goldmine and Airport Roads.

Union County School Bus #18 was involved in an wreck with a Toyota Scion, according to a witness on scene.

A school spokeswoman says 12 students were on the bus. Five were taken to Carolinas Medical Center - Union.

The bus is assigned to the Central Academy of Technology & Arts, a county high school.

The driver of the Scion, 23-year-old Chyna Marie Johnson of the 5900 block of Meadow Mear Drive in Monroe, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, troopers said.

According to Union County Highway Patrol, witnesses said Johnson ran a red light and was hit by the bus, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
