Woman seriously injured when tree falls on car, trapping her

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A woman suffered potentially life threatening injuries when a tree fell on her car.

The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at 1301 West Rocky River Road.

The woman was trapped but firefighters were able to pull her free after about 20 minutes. They say a limb came through the windshield and out the rear driver's side door.

The tree knocked down some power lines. One home remained without power Saturday night.

It's possible the tree had a weak root system and wind may have played a part in bringing it down.

Someone from the city was brought in to check the other trees in the area to make sure they weren't going to come down as well.

City arborist Don McSween reminds folks, when there's the threat of high winds, check your trees for any broken or hanging limbs and see if there's any sign the tree is split.

The city is responsible for taking care of trees along the street, but McSween says a majority of trees that fall and have to be removed from the roadway come from someone's personal property.
