On The Road: Airport overlook

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you're looking for a unique way to spend the weekend, we have just the thing - a trip to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

But you don't have to leave the ground for this rendezvous.

If you ever wanted an up close look at airplanes in action, this is the place to do it.

From just a few hundred yards from Charlotte Douglas International Airport' s North to South runway, you can sit and watch as the traffic comes and goes.

"He absolutely loves to watch them take off and land and the close we can get to em the happier he is," said Kelly Clevenger.

Clevenger brought her son Parker here for the first time and there's no need to guess whether or not he likes it.

"You run out of activities that are the day to day stuff so you can actually just come whenever, you can come all day any day," she said.

And that's what a lot of people do, the area is equipped with picnic tables and benches, or if you prefer, you can just watch and listen from the comfort of your car.

"I do it mostly because my husband enjoys coming to watch the planes take off and land and you know it's just something we can do it's inexpensive, we're seniors," said one onlooker.

Inexpensive is an understatement. The airport overlook is absolutely free.
