CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Thousands of charter school teachers from around the country could have to find another way to fund their retirement.
The Treasury Department wants to change the tax code. Right now Charter schools are part of the government agency with the state. And teachers can participate in the state's retirement plan.
Since charter schools are considered a private-public school, the tax code could place charter schools in another category preventing charter school teachers from participating in state retirement programs.
There are 90,000 charter school teachers around the country and 900 charter school teachers in North Carolina who could be impacted by the proposed legislation.
Educators are fighting this plan. Opponents have until June to voice their opinion to the Treasury Department.
