ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - Michael Catoe has been a Firefighter for seven years. He volunteers Part time in Indian Land and works full time for the Rock Hill Fire Department.
He and all Firefighters have to be pretty fit to do the job of saving lives.
"The turn out gear that we wear weights about 70 pounds just in itself and the tools we add on is just more and more weight that compounds on your body," said Catoe.
Because of that he wanted to do his job better. So he joined Rock Hill Cross Fit in Rock Hill.
Cross Fit exercising has been around for more than a decade, it got its start in California where Police SWAT teams used the exercise techniques in training.
"It's functional movement, constantly varied, performed at high intensity," said Thomas Sayle, Manager and Trainer at Cross Fit Rock Hill.
Sayle says Cross Fit gyms are called boxes for a good reason.
"We train on functional movement because what you do inside the box translates to outside the box," said Sayle. "Take for an example a female that has a baby crawling on the floor and she reaches down and picks the baby up and puts it on her shoulder. She's just completed an Olympic lift.
So in Cross fit You train the entire body at one time doing things that you do every day, when sometimes you don't even know it.
"It's the toughest work out there is," said Catoe.
Tough, but all to help Catoe save lives better.
