Good News: Kids learn writing with a paintbrush

YORK, SC (WBTV) - At Hunter Street Elementary School in York, the art class is a little different these days. Art teacher Diane Brown is trying something new with her students called the Artist Writer's Workshop.

"The children that struggle with writing and haven't been successful with literacy, they blossom in here," said Brown, who just started the program this year.

Children are given lessons on writing to express emotion and feeling. Then they paint pictures with watercolors. Then, the kids come up with spectacular words to describe their paintings.

"The moon is very full and bright, old friends sky and moon share secrets in the twilight," is one example Brown reads from a 4th grade student's writing.

The idea is to teach children to think beyond basic descriptive words and open their minds to a whole new way of thinking. Brown also says it boosts confidence in children who sometimes struggle with writing.
