On The Road: Historic Brattonsville in York Co.

YORK, CO (WBTV) - The latest On The Road adventure takes us just 45 minutes from Charlotte to a historic site that spans 200+ years.

Historic Brattonsville Plantation is one of York County's most popular tourists attractions.

"This represents pretty good middle class living."

It might be hard to believe when you see them, but the buildings in Brattonsville Plantation were built well over 200 years ago. Back then, a good house was a roof and four walls.

Now, this whole place is meant to honor the family that built it.

"It's a historic site that spans three  generations, tells the story of the Bratton family that moved here during those generations -- then the bigger picture of the people besides the Brattons that moved into the backcountry," said Karen Cox, a costumed interpreter at Historic Brattonsville Plantation.

A Revolutionary War soldier, Col. William Bratton moved here in the late 1700's to put down roots. Now, 30 structures on the property tell the history of a span more than 200 years.

Visitors can peruse the site on a self-guided walking tour, and even see inside the house that, at the time was a grand mansion.

Brattonsville also hosts events every weekend where history comes to life.

"We have costumed interpretations every Saturday, highlighting the different things the Bratton family and others would have been doing as the seasons dictate."

Brattonsville only costs $6 for adults. Click here for more information on the plantation, including directions, photos and upcoming events.
