Robberies don't always require weapons

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Robberies don't always require weapons. Sometimes, a piece of paper or quick feet is all that's needed to steal things of value.

Surveillance video at a Boost Mobile cell phone store on East W.T. Harris and Hickory Grove Road shows two hooded men peering in the front window at 2:30 in the morning.

Suddenly, they throw a large rock, shattering glass as it lands inside the store. Quickly, the two go to work, vaulting over a set of chairs, then throwing smaller rocks at a display case.

They kick out the glass and in the process, comically, kick each other while loading their arms with expensive cell phones.

CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson reacted by saying, "They probably had been watching, casing the building, and seeing people coming and going, late at night, you know Harris Boulevard is a busy place, but they were bold."

These cell stealers then left a small trail of evidence.

"They did locate the empty boxes which about four blocks away, but the cell phones were gone."

Across town, at the Walgreens on and South Blvd., a man walked through the front door at 8:00 in the evening. With a store full of customers, he goes to the counter and passes a note.

"The note stated give me all your money from the cash register, or I'm going to kill you," said the detective.

He threatened to kill the clerk, yet, according to Detective Cuthbertson, he never showed a gun.

"They described his demeanor as real calm, cool and collected, but no weapon at all.

"When he got ready to leave the store, he took the note with him, walked right out and headed to South Boulevard."

If you know anything about the robbery at the Walgreens, or the break-in at the Boost Mobile, call Crimestoppers at (704) 334-1600 and you could earn a $1,000 reward.
