BOONE/WATAUGA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - If you're looking for a fun way to spend your weekend, you never have to go far.
We all know the North Carolina M=mountains are beautiful year-round, even despite hosting colder temperatures.
But for those of you who truly love winter and its cold temps, there's something extra special coming up just for you.
You'll have a chance to experience everything about winter at Winterfest.
Wright Tilley knows - he's with the Boone/Watauga Tourism Development Authority.
One of the fun things about Winterfest- the polar plunge.
"People dress up in costume and jump into freezing cold lake in front of Chetola Resort," said Tilley.
And if jumping in the cold water isn't for you...
It's kind of an interesting event to watch from a spectator perspective," he added.
There are plenty of other things to do, from a chili cook off to wine tasting's, and of course, skiing.
Winter's had a little bit of a slow start for those who like to hit the slopes, but now Appalachian Ski Mountain is covered in snow.
And everyone appreciates a little romance, right? So you might consider the High Country for a Valentines Day getaway.
A romantic package at one of the many bed and breakfast inns in the Boone area, around historic Valle Cruces, or a cabin rental in the mountains with a hot tub and some champagne may be just the think for you and your sweetheart.
And don't forget the many great restaurants in the area that are good for special occasion dining.
