Snow comes just in time for busy holiday ski weekend

BLOWING ROCK, NC (WBTV) - The slopes at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock are coming alive this weekend, just in time.

"The winter's had a little bit of a slow start," said Drew Stanley, marketing director for the ski lodge.

He's talking about rain, thunderstorms, and unseasonably warm weather that's caused the slopes to rely heavily on artificial snow makers for the last several weeks.  But not this weekend.

"This weekend looks perfect for conditions. We actually had about three inches of snow last night. We're expecting maybe a dusting tonight, so really the best conditions all season," said Stanley.

"I'm just really glad to be out of school for a day!" said Sidney Wiswell, one of hundreds of skiers taking advantage of the long holiday weekend and the fresh snow.

"It's really cold, but, I mean we haven't had that much snow, so I guess they must be excited to have people here," said Wiswell.

The MLK holiday weekend is a crucial time for places like Appalachian Ski Mountain. The extra days off from work and school bring in some of the seasons biggest groups of tourists and locals.

The overnight snowfall put visitors in the skiing and snowboarding spirit...something that just can't be manufactured. In fact, the real snow and cold temperatures mean the snow makers will actually be turned off all day Saturday and Sunday, giving skiers a chance to enjoy the slopes the natural way.

"It's gonna be fantastic. I'm really looking forward to it," said Stanley.
