Tornado flipped boats on Lake Hickory; bringing twister total to 3

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Boats that were flipped over and damaged on Lake Hickory on Wednesday evening were caused by an 80-mph tornado, the National Weather Service said Friday.

The tornado in Caldwell County was among 2 others that caused major damage in Burke and Rutherford counties, including 15 people hurt and 75 homes damaged.

On Lake Hickory, several boats were flipped over in the lake and at least one other boat was smashed on a dock.

The tornado 4 miles southeast of Granite Falls touched down immediately northeast of the Highway 321 bridge and hit the north shore of Lake Hickory and the Lake Hickory Marina.

Damage included peeled roofing on the marina, snapped pine trees, overturned pontoon boats and a dock as well as damage to other outdoor furniture and structures.
