RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A high school student is charged with felony drunken driving after a weekend crash killed his 17-year-old passenger.
Raleigh police say 16-year-old Garrett Prince, the driver, lost control of his Jeep sport utility vehicle about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, ran off the road and struck a tree. A report says the Jeep was traveling 75 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Police spokesman Jim Sughrue says Prince is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, careless driving, speeding, open container of liquor and possession of marijuana.
Police say Millbrook High School student Elizabeth Molloy died at the scene. The driver was treated for injuries at a local hospital.
Millbrook students gathered at the crash site for a candlelight vigil Saturday.
The driver's first court appearance is set for Monday.
