WBTV Speak Out: 2011 Year in Review

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

As we wrap up another year, let's review some of the local topics that warranted discussion.

Schools continue to be a major cause for concern.

We looked at the dire budget cuts projected, then wondered where a surplus of funds came from.

We said "Goodbye" to Dr. Gorman and "Hello" to a new School Board, challenging them to turn things around.

We welcomed the DNC's choice of Charlotte as its Convention host.

But were disappointed that more jobs were not filled locally.

We wondered about lax security at the airport…

Questioned high water rates when we've been conserving water…

Called for revamping state vehicle inspections…

And reminded advocates of toll roads that we already pay for these roads with our taxes.

We looked at Bank of America's tarnished image…

Advocated community service for unemployment benefits…

And hoped our new District Attorney could change a system that puts too many criminals back on the streets.

But there are many things to celebrate in our community:

Habitat for Humanity's 1000th home…

The opening of Charlotte's Ronald McDonald House…

And the local vets who created "Purple Heart Homes."

We welcomed the CIAA Basketball Tourney back to town…

Thanked the "Men Who Care Global" for making a difference…

And saluted those who joined the Komen Race for the Cure.

And, as always, we asked YOU to get involved…

to help your kids at school and at home…

to write your politicians…

and, of course, to vote – no matter how "minor" the election.

For 2012, we encourage YOU to "Speak Out" – say what's on your mind.

We'll continue to tell you what's on ours.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
