Police see increase in stolen holiday packages

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The holidays are almost here, but not everyone gets to spend them with family and friends.

So many of us resort to sending gifts through the mail.

It also means more thieves are on the lookout for unattended packages.

"They happen from regular neighborhoods to apartment complexes so it can happen anywhere," said Sgt. Fred Newell of the CMPD.

Sgt. Newell says the number of stolen packages increases every holiday season. In some cases, the thieves will follow the delivery trucks.

"They don't know what they're getting, so if they follow the truck and pick up the packages, it is like Christmas for them because they don't have a clue what's inside the packages usually," said Sgt. Newell.

To avoid having your packages stolen request a signature confirmation for delivery, make arrangements with a neighbor to pick up your package, track your package online so you know exactly what time it will arrive or have it delivered to your job.
