2011 Carolinas' Carrousel Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Every year right before Thanksgiving, a new high school girl is named the Carolinas' Carrousel Queen.

It's not a pageant as much as a scholarship awards ceremony.  This year, to match the focus, the title changed.  Instead of a "2011 Carrousel Queen", we now have a "2011 Carrousel Scholar."

Fifty-eight girls from high schools across both Carolinas competed this afternoon at the Center City Marriott in Uptown Charlotte.

WBTV Anchor Molly Grantham emceed the event. WBTV is a sponsor of the Carrousel Parade, which will take place at 10:00am on Thanksgiving morning.  It will air on WBTV at 1:00pm.

At the scholarship ceremony, each girl gave a 30 second speech about "what makes her who she is."

The ladies were also judged on a previous one-on-one interview and academic achievements.

This year's winners are...

2011 Carrousel Scholar: Molly Walker from  Jay M. Robinson High School in Cabarrus County.

1st runner up:  Shannon Elaine Kay from Ashbrook H.S. in Gaston County
2nd runner up:  Sarah Elizabeth Clarke from North Lincoln H.S. in Lincoln County
3rd runner up:  Samantha Forlenza from South Meck H.S. in Mecklenburg County
4th runner up:  Jessica Brugman from Forestview H.S. in Gaston County
