How the holidays can help your job search

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Wouldn't it be nice if you could sit on Santa's lap, ask him for a job, and actually wake up to one on Christmas morning?

Well, it's not going to be that easy. But boosting your career in December may not be as hard as you think.

"The majority of people that are in a job search tend to take off during the holidays. They think that no one's going to be hiring, no one's really going to take them seriously," says jobs consultant Robyn Crigger of OI Partners.

Crigger says they could not be more wrong though.

In fact, she says hitting the job search hard over the holidays can help.

The first advantage is obvious - because so many job seekers become less active over the season, competition won't be as fierce.

And you can use festive traditions to really stand out.

If there's a company you're particularly interested in, send them a gift...think of it as a mini presentation tied up with a bow.

"It might be a gift of an idea," Crigger says, "or just enough information to help get them curious so they want to learn more about you."

Also, take this opportunity to send many companies in your industry holiday cards. Get your name out there.

"You may even want to include a little newsletter," Crigger suggests.

And follow up with phone calls (because administrative assistants take vacation time now, odds are better that you'll get a direct line to the boss).

"You may be surprised that when you call you're going to get them, and not their assistant, so yes, you have the chance of capturing the right person at the right time," says Crigger.
