WBTV Speak Out: A Season of Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Tomorrow we celebrate Thanksgiving.

But after another year of record unemployment...

And an economy that just can't seem to recover…

That spirit of celebration may be hard for some of us to feel.

While it does sound cliché to say "count your blessings,"

There is something of great value to be found in that old expression.

We tend to take a lot of things for granted.

A warm home…

Enough to eat…

Family and friends who care.

We complain about our jobs…

Traffic…

Long lines at the grocery checkout aisle.

And, how will we ever get the house ready for company in time?

Well believe me, there are plenty of people who wished they were in our shoes.

And you don't have to look very hard to find them.

Those who have lost their homes to foreclosure…

Families facing hunger….

People forced to ask for help with basic needs for the first time in their lives.

So, let's count our blessings this Thanksgiving—no matter how small.

Enjoy our time with friends and family…

And remembering that these are the moments that make life so rich.

And as the holiday season begins, it's a great time to think about what we can do for others.

Perhaps volunteer at a local shelter or community center…

Make a donation to a  charity or food bank.

You know there's nothing like offering a helping hand to those in need to help us realize how lucky we really are.
