Overnight garage fire forces residents out of home

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Firefighters struggle through cluttered storage room trying to put down the flames in an early morning garage fire.

You could smell it and taste it long before you saw the smoke billowing from the small home located on Elswick Lane near the intersection of Toddville Road and Freedom Drive.

Charlotte firefighters were called out just after midnight after the homeowner said his garage was on fire.

Crews said when they arrived, they saw smoke pouring from a converted side garage, now used as storage.

According to officials, the fire was knocked down with minimal effort with a total of five-thousand dollars damage.  The two challenges were the heavy smoke the flames produced, and the clutter in the garage, which firefighters had to crawl over and around.

The two people inside the home were able to return home later in the morning.  Fire investigators arrived on scene to try to make a determination on why this happened.

Firefighters said the fire alarm alerted the family of the fire, and may have saved their lives.
