"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
We've known them as "G.I. Joes" or "Janes."
Historically, they've been called "doughboys"…"midshipmen"…"cadets"…or even "leathernecks."
They're former members of our American military.
And chances are you know a number of them.
Each November, we set aside a day to honor these brave men and women.
Today's military consists of volunteers…Recruits who know when they sign up how much they will be sacrificing.
And yet, they willingly do so.
They often leave behind loved ones…and they certainly give up the comforts of home.
They endure ungodly conditions…some even witness horrific sights.
And sadly, tragically, not all of them come back alive.
Why do they do it?
Well, there's any number of reasons.
But we suspect they all share a strong sense of duty and an intense love of country.
When these soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen finally leave the service, they earn the most noble title of "Veteran."
So, on this Veterans Day holiday, we encourage you to stop and remember why you may have this day off of work…why you're out of school.
Think about those who have so valiantly fought for the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy.
Better yet, find a Veteran you know, reach out your hand, and tell him or her, "Thank you."
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
