Cab driver in serious condition after stabbing

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A cab driver is in serious condition after he was stabbed.

It happened at around 11 Wednesday night near the intersection of Albemarle Road and Jenkins Drive, just a few blocks from the old Eastland Mall.

The driver has been identified as Kofi Awutey who worked for Diamond Cab Company.

It is owned by Nazakat Khan who described Awutey as a dedicated worker.

"He was never a problem with anybody. He was a nice guy, very nice person,"Khan said."He picked up somebody that tried to rob him and I think he no want to give him money and they stabbed him."

Awutey was rushed to the hospital with what police call life threatening injuries.

Khan told WBTV news that the passenger who police was looking for was picked up from a pay phone on Albermarle Road not far from where the robbery occurred.

After this robbery, the taxi company will only accept riders with valid phone numbers and addresses.

"If some body's number is calling blocked on a caller ID. We're not gonna answer," Khan said.

Investigators  say they have no suspects at this time.

    The remains of a Rowan County soldier who vanished during World War II have been found and are being brought home this week for burial in his hometown of Gold Hill, 60 miles northeast of Charlotte.
