CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Police say a teenager was killed in a wreck and an underage driver is charged with drinking and driving in the incident.
The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday morning when a car went off the road and into a tree along the 3700 block of Back Creek Church Road.
Police say the driver, whose name hasn't been released yet, crossed the center line and then over-corrected. The car then spun out of control and crashed backwards into a large tree, according to the police report filed.
According to the report, 19-year old Joseph Andrew Sciascia, of Harrisburg, was sitting in the back seat when police say the car slammed into the tree on his side of the vehicle. Sciascia was killed on impact, the report states.
The driver, whose exact age was not released, was airlifted to Carolina Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday. He is facing charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While Intoxicated under 21. Police say they also plan to charge him with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle.
A third passenger was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
