BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, SC (WIS) - A Batesburg-Leesville Police Department dispatcher was arrested at the police department on Monday in connection with a major cocaine sweep in September.
On Monday, Deputies and Officers of the multi jurisdictional Lexington County Sheriff's Department Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested 31-year-old Shannon Gomez of Leesville. Gomez was employed as a Batesburg-Leesville Police Department Dispatcher prior to the time of her arrest.
Police said Gomez's arrest is connected to a large cocaine ring bust in Lexington County on September 11 where 19 men were charged with conspiring to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and 280 grams or more of crack. Another man was charged with shooting at investigators when they stormed the house.
According to arrest warrants, between the dates if May 1, 2011 and June 18, 2011, Gomez gave law enforcement information to Antonio Williams, who had been convicted on drug offenses on more than more occasion. Officials accused the 31-year-old woman of texting information about narcotics investigations to Williams, who was one of the 20 men arrested in the cocaine ring bust in September.
Batesburg-Leesville Police Chief Wallace Oswald said his department cooperated fully with the investigation. "This was clearly an isolated incident involving one employee whose poor decisions do not reflect the actions of all officers or dispatchers of the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department," said Oswald.
Gomez was fired from the police department. She was charged with Misconduct in Office and is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center. Bond has not yet been set.
