Pig racing at the Cleveland County Fair

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - As soon as the bell rings, the gates fly open and at least 4 hoggish contenders go dashing for the finish line. They're more likely scrambling to get to their cheese puff prize waiting at the end, but the audience doesn't mind.

"It's just good family fun here at the fair," says Brent Cook who owns and operates Hogway Speedway at the 87th Annual Cleveland County Fair.

The pigs are given NASCAR names like Squealing Tony Stewart and Hammy Hamlin. They race around a fenced in track in front of an audience.

The pigs compete daily and "rig rooters" from the crowd get to pick a pig for the winner. If their choice wins, they get a ribbon.

The Cleveland County Fair runs through October 8th.
