CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A man was seriously injured after crashing his sports utility vehicle into a tractor trailer in north Mecklenburg County late Thursday night.
The wreck happened around midnight as the tractor trailer was getting onto southbound I-77 from Sam Furr Road (Exit 25).
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the tractor trailer was traveling about 40 miles per hour at the time of the collision.
The SUV, which was already heading southbound on I-77, slammed into the rear of the tractor trailer.
When emergency crews arrived, they completely shut down the interstate while firefighters extricated the victim from the SUV.
A medical helicopter transported the 25-year-old man to Carolinas Medical Center. The highway patrol later charged the victim with DWI.
The driver of the semi truck was not injured.
