CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A woman was killed and her husband injured in east Charlotte late Saturday night after their motorcycle hit two vehicles that had slowed down due to some roadwork.

The wreck happened around 9:51 p.m. on E. Independence Boulevard.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on E. Independence Boulevard when it approached slowing traffic due to road maintenance on the left-hand shoulder.

The driver of the motorcycle, Darrell Fries, applied his brakes to avoid a collision. Police said the motorcycle started to skid and struck the back of a Pontiac Grand Am which was stopped in the middle lane.

Darrell Fries' wife, Susan, was a passenger on the motorcycle and she was thrown from the bike.

The motorcycle then hit the back of a Ford Windstar in the left lane.

Darrell and Susan Fries were both transported to Carolinas Medical Center Main where she later died.

The occupants of the Pontiac Grand Am and the Ford Windstar were not injured.
