Former competitors in the fiercest rivalry in the state – Auburn University vs. the University of Alabama – will meet in a pre-season clash in Hoover on Saturday, Aug. 13 to raise funds for tornado relief.
Gov. Robert Bentley will join more than 170 former Auburn and Alabama football players who've signed on to play flag football at 7 p.m. Saturday at Spain Park High School. All proceeds from the game and from other "Rivals Unite for Recovery" events over the weekend will benefit the Governor's Emergency Relief Fund.
"No rivalry is more important than helping Alabama rebuild and recover," Governor Bentley said. "I would like to thank the organizers who are raising funds to help their fellow Alabamians. Roll Tide and War Eagle!"
Alabama Power is helping sponsor the weekend of activities, which was organized by Unite 364 and the Heart in Dixie Foundation, which is comprised of members of both the Alabama A-Club and the Auburn Football Letterman Club. A fan zone, free with a ticket to the game, opens at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with music, food, games and autograph-signing sessions.
Tickets are just $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 2 to 12. Children under 2 are free. For details and tickets, visit www.rivalsuniteforrecovery.com.
The fund-raising continues Sunday with a golf pairings party at the Birmingham Marriott, followed by a pro-am golf tournament on Monday at Greystone Golf and Country Club. Tickets to the pairings party can be purchased by calling 334-705-5466.
"Alabama Power is proud to help support Rivals Unite for Recovery," said Zeke Smith, Alabama Power executive vice president. "Communities are still rebuilding after the deadly tornadoes, and we are committed to doing our part to help in the recovery."
