WBTV Speak Out: "Greed is Good?"

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

"Greed…is good."

You know the phrase from the movies.

"Greed" pours money into the economy…creates jobs…inflates our savings accounts.

Personally, greed compels us to buy homes we can't afford…the latest sports cars…hi def TVs…

"Just put it on the credit card – we'll pay for it later."

National greed builds a bigger and fatter government…a massive new healthcare program…unsustainable entitlements.

It bails out banks, mortgage companies, and automakers.

"Just keep pouring out the money – we'll pay for it later."

Well, ladies and gentlemen, "later" is "now."

While politicians demonstrate a massive lack of leadership, we teeter on the verge of national bankruptcy.

Think the problems in Greece, Spain, and Italy can't happen here?

Well why not? Do you think we're THAT special?

If our country goes under, it's less likely to be from a military strike than from a self-inflicted economic wound.

We can't keep digging the hole deeper and deeper.

Bankruptcy is not an option – not if we want to live in the United States that we know it.

At some point, we've got to cut up the credit card and live within our means.

We believe we've reached that point.

Sacrifice will be required by us all and that won't be fun.  It never is.

We can't have everything we want right when we want it and we'll be better off in the long run.

Greed may be good in the movies, but in real life, it comes with an awfully steep price tag.
