MOUNT HOLLY, NC (WBTV) - Mark Williams told WBTV he was attacked by a fox Sunday morning at his Crest Street home.

Williams says he was walking to his car when the fox jumped up and bit him on the leg.

"I saw it eye to eye and it just ran straight at me...It didn't just bite me and run off - it hung on," Williams said. He was able to hit the fox between the eyes with his car keys and knock it away.

Williams' doctor tells him the fox could've been rabid because of its behavior. Williams is undergoing a round of shots.

Gaston County Animal Control officials report 3 confirmed cases of rabies this year. One case involved a puppy - two others involved raccoons.

"It frightens me," Neighbor Stephanie Barton said.

A trap has been set in hopes of catching the fox. But until then neighbors like Barton say they're keeping a close eye on their children and pets.

Animal Control warns folks to avoid this type of wildlife and to call them if you see animals acting suspiciously.

Gaston County Animal Control Administrator Reggie Horton calls the first line of defense though vaccinating pets.
