Warrant: Teen, 2 others, lure man into vacant home to kill him

ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) - Police in Rock Hill have arrested a teenager after they say he and two others lured a Charlotte man into a vacant home to shoot and kill him.

18-year-old Montez Lavarrey Rutledge was arrested on Sunday and booked into the Rock Hill jail at 11:08 p.m., charged in the murder of 21-year-old Chance Pate.

According to Rutledge's arrest warrant, the teen and two others, 21-year-old Jonathon Garrett Jones of Fort Mill and 20-year-old Audra Nicole Cunningham, lured Pate to into the vacant home on Wednesday night and ambushed him.

The warrants state that Pate was shot multiple times with a semi-automatic handgun.

According to Rock Hill police, officers were called out to Amelia Avenue in reference to a shooting that happened around 7:02 p.m. Wednesday night. A woman told officers that she had heard three gunshots in the direction of the 1200 block of Abernathy Street.

The woman told officers that she saw 21-year-old Chance Pate "crawling on the ground towards the street" and then saw a white Ford Crown Victoria pull up.  That's when she says several people got out, pulled Pate into the car and sped off with Pate hanging out of the car.

According to a police report, the home where the shooting occurred has been vacant for a while.  Officers say they found "many spent shell casings by the front door and one shell casing on the porch."

Officers found vehicle a short time later at Hargett Park along Deas Street and found Pate with gunshot wounds to his abdomen.  Officers say the driver and passenger were also there and told police that the shooters had driven away in a steel-blue Ford Contour.

Pate was transported to the hospital where he later pronounced died.  K-9 units were called to the area to search for the shooters but weren't able to find them.

Jones and Cunningham were arrested and charged with murder on Friday. Rutledge was charged late Sunday night.
