High heat may bring added stress for seniors

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -Evening rush hour delivered a firm warning of what the rest of the week could deliver.

Low 90's on Tuesday, but higher temps in coming days.

Staying out of it for Sanford Howie means relying on the power of two wheels, sturdy legs and a strong will to endure it all.

"If you're gonna be out in it, it's better to put a cold towel around your neck and something on your head," he said.

He lives at Center City's Edwin Towers near the corner of 10th and Church. Residents are clearly dodging what Mother Nature is serving up.

On many night's most chairs on the balconies are taken, but this latest heat wave is bringing its share of supply and demand.

"Seniors are a little more susceptible to heat than a lot of other folks," according to Deborah Sparks is with the Council on Aging. "So we recommend that older adults stay inside in an air conditioned room or something well ventilated with a fan. That they drink plenty of cold water."
